Reishi Mushrooms in Pregnancy + What is a Reishi Baby?
Traditional Chinese Medicine holds that taking reishi mushroom in pregnancy allows a child to have a calm, clear disposition. A baby who is born from a parent who has used reishi mushroom support during pregnancy is known as a reishi baby.
My acupuncturist, Tess Bradley, recommended reishi tincture to me years ago. I would say her reasoning for recommending it to me at that time was to help with grounding, finding my purpose, and lifting my mood. It was only when Tess’s daughter was born that I learned about reishi babies. Tess’s daughter was a reishi baby! She had (and still has!) crystal blue eyes and was very alert.
Three years later, I was (and still am!) taking reishi tincture as a tonic herb almost daily (when I remember). This means that I was taking reishi long before I became pregnant, I took reishi throughout my pregnancy, and I still do! I hold that the benefits of reishi tincture even pass through my breastmilk and benefit my daughter. Not only do the immune-boosting properties of reishi benefit her, but also the mood lifting benefits. I like to say reishi mushrooms promote happy, calm awareness.
I felt that using reishi tincture in pregnancy was safe for me because I had been taking it for a long time. I was not concerned about the alcohol in the tincture because the amount is so minute. There are many benefits to ingesting herbs in tincture form, such as the fact that many herbal benefits are optimally extracted from tincturing herbs in alcohol; and dosage regulation. In his book Making Plant Medicine, Richo Cech says that, “tinctures are stable, convenient, and due to the fact that they are cold-pressed and protected from enzymatic change through the addition of alcohol, they probably represent the actual chemistry of the herb more closely than any other preparation.”
The reishi mushroom tincture created by me at wabi sabi herbs is a double extraction, meaning it’s first tinctured in alcohol, then decocted in water so that the tincture contains properties from the reishi mushrooms that are both alcohol and water soluable.
